Get in my tummy

Tell us a little about the origins of Waffelier.
Our love for liege waffles began when we first travelled to the different cities in Belgium. As we walked the historic streets of Liege, Bruges, Antwerp and the other towns, we were attracted to the addictive street snack found on virtually every street corner. Coming back to Melbourne and armed with a domestic waffle machine, we started experimenting with different recipes. Soon waffle parties became a weekly thing amongst our friends and WAFFELIER was born; to spread the waffle love to the residents of Melbourne.

Describe your creative process.
We love food and won’t deny it! We get very inspired from our favourite flavours and new ones that we discover every day. Every meal becomes a big deconstructive mission as we find out how different flavours react with one another and how it appeals to the senses. The name WAFFELIER is a play between the words of ‘waffle’ and ‘atelier’. We like to think ourselves as waffle artisans as we experiment with different recipes, flavours and discovering new eating experiences. We have a simple goal; “to make food fun” with good nutritional value and creative innovation.

What inspires you the most?
Our customers! We get the greatest joy from happy customers. We believe a happy tummy equals to a happy customer. Nothing motivates us more than seeing the happy smiles on our customers (especially little kids! We want to kidnap them so much!) as we hand them our waffles on the paddle stick and having them come back for seconds!

Name some of your most favourite local artists and designers.
We have too many to name but some include Adriano Zumbo in Sydney for his unique desserts, Dominique Ansel in New York for his invention of the cronut, and Burch and Purchese in South Yarra. We cannot resist their creative creations! We like how they experiment with different flavours and find a working combination even with the most incompatible ingredients!

What are your ultimate dreams for Waffelier?
Bringing these delicious creations to Melbourne has already been a dream for us. We have learnt a lot along the way and each day we look forward to expanding the Waffelier exposure. Hopefully in the near future, we have the opportunity to satisfy the waffle cravings of Australia!

What will will we find from Waffelier at our July Bend and Snap Market?
We will be freshly baking our scrumptious waffles at the market. Handcrafted from the finest locally sourced ingredients, our rich buttery yeast-raised dough are filled with chunks of pearl sugar only found in Liege waffles. Look forward to our favourites; very vanilla, cinnamon and peanut butter!
