Tell us a little about the origins of Lauren Nicholson.
I’ve been creating images for a long time but have started to sell my work online and at art and design markets this year which has been super fun! I completed a bachelor of Illustration last year and am now trying to figure out what next so this seemed like a natural progression and a good way to meet others doing the same thing.
Describe your creative process.
I am always on the hunt for second hand books with interesting images that I can give a new life. I really love the colours found in old photographs that reference far off places and cultures. So while I’m always on the lookout for books I also like to experiment with watercolour and my own illustrations. I like to combine traditional and digital media, play around with different colour combinations using repetition and mirror imagery and I usually learn something in the process. All of this happens in my studio in the city that I share with three others.
What inspires you the most?
Books, music, architecture, how nature transcends.
Escape, new adventures and far off places.
Memories and simple things.
The spaces where people create, I love the Selby.
Name some of your most favourite local artists and designers.
What are your ultimate dreams for Lauren Nicholson?
More opportunities for collaboration, an overseas residency, and a solo show.
And to make the best work I can.
